Rugs, Accessories and Color Put Home in Warm-up Mode for Winter
As the temperatures drop, the sisal matting and blue and white slipcovers—just perfect for summer—might soon make your living space seem more like a chilly porch than a warm, inviting place to end your day. With a few simple decorating techniques, that summertime motif can be easily transformed to a warm, inviting room that’s just right for the darker days and cooler temperatures that await.
“Begin on the floor,” says Julie Rosenblum, design expert at Nourison, the world’s largest manufacturer of area rugs. “Today’s options include natural fibers, hand-carved textured piles, vibrant as well as muted colors, or vegetable-dyed yarns. Winter is the perfect time to add a new rug to your home and change the overall feeling of any room.”
Here are some simple tips Rosenblum recommends for “winterizing” the interior of a home in the warmest way:
Add a Winter Rug: You can roll it right over your summer flooring if you’d like to add instant warmth—both underfoot and in the color pallette you select. Rugs in warm earth tones—from burnished browns and russets to pomegranate, burgundy and plum—change the entire perception of a room and provide a ready-to-use color scheme. Neutral colors in understated patterns make a sophisticated statement, while bold colors in modern geometric patterns become art for the floor. Pick up a few of the rug’s central colors when selecting accents such as pillows, curtain, throws and accessories. Changing a lmap shade is another inexpensive touch.
Add Fabric and Texture Everywhere: Drapes and slipcovers also immediately change a room’s look and feel. Use complementary colors and fabrics that are nubby, nappy or textured. Skin accents, embroidered velvet pillows and textured throws are other small additions that can transform a room from summer cool to winter warm.
The Art’s in the Accents: Colored candles on a mantle, woven baskets filled with winter plants, special family moments caught on camera and artistically set in timeless frames evoke warmth and draw the eye to a home that’s truly beautifully “winterized.” To add the finished touch, drop a shaped rug on the floor. Rounds, ovals and scallops make an interesting difference.
Use Light for Warmth: Many homes are graced with fireplaces and it’s a wonderful time of year to draw attention to this part of the room—whether you use it for fires or not. Less is more when decorating mantels. Balance accessories with odd numbers—candlesticks, vases and picture frames. If you have high ceilings, make sure pieces are tall, and capture the height with a mirror or piece of art that you love.
