Beliefnet, the most comprehensive online resource for inspiration and spirituality, announced the winners for the annual “Most Inspiring Person of the Year” campaign which recognizes outstanding achievement for individuals whose actions inspire others around the world. Two winners were chosen, one by readers’ votes and the other by the editors of Beliefnet.com.
Jay Winuk, a New York City resident and recipient of The President’s Call to Service Award, was chosen as the Reader’s Choice Award winner. Jay lost his younger brother, Glenn, an attorney and firefighter, in the line of duty on 9/11. His brother’s courage inspired Jay to co-found MyGoodDeed.org, a nonprofit leading the movement to transform 9/11 into an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance. Jay will be honored with Beliefnet’s Cup of Kindness™ award which celebrates the establishment and development of MyGoodDeed.org.
The Editor’s Choice Award winner is Katie Davis, a resident of the Nashville, Tennessee area, and mother of 13 adopted daughters. After traveling to Uganda in 2006, Katie was compelled to start a child sponsorship program, matching children who are unable to afford schooling with sponsors from around the world. By 2008, over 150 children signed up for the program leading Katie to establish a nonprofit organization, Amazima Ministries International. The organization ministers to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the children of Uganda. As this year’s Editor’s Choice winner, Katie will be awarded $1,000 to be donated to the charity of her choice.
“These inspiring individuals continue to demonstrate their kindness through courage, compassion and consideration. We commend both winners and aspire to live up to the ideals they so fully embrace,” said Beliefnet President and CEO Stephen Halliday.
