On Tuesday, August 28, a news conference will be held at the Oregon State Department of Agriculture in Salem to announce the Coalition of Environmentally-Conscious Growers and a tree grower’s certification that is sure to become a trend throughout agriculture. The purpose is to educate the public on the importance of living trees and promote healthier growing practices.
Formed by two significant growers – Holiday Tree Farms and Yule Tree Farms – the Coalition of Environmentally-Conscious Growers will recognize those growers who best exemplify sustainable growing practices. Yule Tree and Holiday represent 20% of all the Christmas trees grown in Oregon (the country’s largest source of Christmas trees) and are themselves, models for all growers in the state and nationwide.
The first of its kind, the certification will involve evaluating growers on:
• Erosion control/soil conservation
• Integrated pest management
• Tributary protection
